[2023 Autumn Auction] The collection of Alan and Simon Hartmann will be auctioned at Bonhams in New York on December 14
Bonhams New York announced that it will grandly present "The First Time: The Collection of Alan and Simon Hartman" in New York this winter. Alan Hartman (1930–2023) and his wife Simone (Simone) are well-known art antique dealers. Their collection is outstanding, including masterpieces by Impressionist masters, as well as a dazzling array of Asian art treasures. .
Selected items will be on a global tour at Bonhams in Paris, London and Hong Kong. Later,23 pieces of Western art and 70 pieces of Asian art will be auctioned at Bonhams in New York on December 14th.. The second part of the Asian art collection will be auctioned at the "New York Asian Art Week" in March 2024, and will continue to appear in subsequent Chinese and Japanese art auctions.

Alan Hartman bought his first jade collection at the age of 12, and has since embarked on a collecting journey. His passion for collecting antiques and art continued from that time until his death earlier this year. Allen opened the famous "Hartman Rare Art" gallery on Madison Avenue in New York, with branches in Dallas and Palm Beach, collecting art from all over the world. He and his wife Simone are recognized as outstanding patrons of the arts. Over the past half century, they have built up an outstanding private collection, which can be found in major museums around the world, such as the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and New York City. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Brooklyn Museum in New York, and the Israel Museum in Jerusalem, among others.
The auction will feature a series of masterpieces by Impressionist and modernist masters, including Paul Signac, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Asian art includes exquisite Tang and Ming Dynasty porcelain, elegant jade carvings, as well as unique Japanese art and ancient Chinese bronzes.

The leading work of this auction is Paul Signac's "The Town of Sisteron". In this year,Signac created only nine works, and this painting is one of them. The painting depicts a small town called Sisteron, which is located in a narrow valley between two ridges and is known as the "Porte de Provence". The work is painted with delicate, sparkling pointillism. At the same time, the bright colors also show the essence of Fauvism. As a leading figure in the Pointillism movement, Signac used a large number of solid color and tiny dots to outline the mountainous terrain and dramatic light on the canvas. Each dot appears on the paper like a pearl falling on a jade plate, while at the same time it is cleverly integrated into the whole, which is fascinating.

Another highlight is Claude Monet's "Seine near Giverny". The work is vivid and vivid, demonstrating Monet's exploration of the Impressionist style and foreshadowing his later mastery of the style. The painting depicts a peaceful bend in the Seine near Monet's home in Giverny. Monet often boarded the ship there to paint, recording the peaceful beauty he felt at the time.
Asian Art Highlights
The Hartmanns were keen on collecting masterpieces of Impressionist and modern art, but the focus of their collection was none other than Chinese and Japanese art. Highlights in this section include: two rare pieces of blue and white porcelain from the Jiajing period of the Ming Dynasty, a pair of large Qing Kangxi gourd vases with gilded seats and Ruyi cloud heads, an important group of ancient Chinese bronzes, and a series of exquisite Japanese lacquer inkstone boxes.
