On December 5th, the two auction houses of Guardian and Holly's International open up the modern and contemporary art sector in Beijing. Guardian launched four sessions of 20th Century & Contemporary Art, 20th Century Art Evening Sale, Contemporary Art Evening Sale and Contemporary Art Evening Sale ( II ), Holly's International has presented the Modern And Contemporary Art. Modern And Contemporary Art of Holly's International in Beijing


Modern And Contemporary Art of Holly's International, a total 42 pieces of Chinese and Western artworks were sold, with a sold-by-lot rate of 91.3%. The total transaction volume exceeded CNY ¥118.6 million, with 47.8% of works sold above the estimated price. Among them, San Yu's potted work Yellow Chrysanthemums Against Red Background, was completed in 1940, led the auction with a high price of CNY ¥81.65 million.

Top1 Priced Lot: Yellow Chrysanthemums Against Red Background of San Yu

Yellow Chrysanthemums Against Red Background was sold for HKD $46 million in Hong Kong at 2015, and it was presented again after 5 years, which attracted the attention of the market. Under the boldly laid red background, San Yu outlines the tabletop, glass vase and proudly independent golden yellow chrysanthemum with dense and precise lines. It was estimated at CNY ¥50-80 million before the auction. In the end, it was hammering at CNY ¥71 million, with a commission fee of CNY ¥81.65 million, setting the most expensive personal record in the Mainland of San Yu and accounting for more than half of the total turnover in this auction.

Top2 Priced Lot: Standing Tt of Zhou Chunya

The "Green Dog” is the most iconic symbol of life in Zhou Chunya's works. It is an adventure in the artist's exploration on painting languages and an emotional expression. Standing Tt, which was presented this time, was created in 2008. It was estimated at CNY ¥5.5 to 7.5 million before the auction, and was finally sold for CNY ¥5.75 million, becoming the second highest-priced lot on site.

Top3 Priced Lot: Kennel Club (Scenarios) of Robert Rauschenberg

Robert Rauschenberg is an internationally influential and a representative figure of post-war American avant-garde art and pop art. Kennel Club (Scenarios) was auctioned at Holly's International, with an appraisal of RMB 4.6 million, the final sale is within the estimate.

South Korean artist Nam Kwan’s Inner Reflection was sold for CNY ¥2.3 million, which updating his personal Top2 record; many artists such as Giorgio De Chirico, Luo Zhongli and Tan Ping have achieved good results. 20th Century Art Evening Sale of Guardian in Beijing


This auction includes masterpieces by leaders of the major Chinese art genres since the beginning of the 20th Century. Competition at the auction site was fierce, and the hammer was finally settled with a turnover of CNY ¥167.6 million. A total of 21 lots were sold in the auction, with a sold-by-lot rate of 77.8%. There were 7 lots that exceeded CNY ¥10 million with 2 lots that set a new auction record. The four major auctions of the four genre leaders Yan Wenliang, Liu Haisu, Wu Dayu and Wu Zuoren, and the 6 heavyweight works of Wu Guanzhong all changed hands. Among them, Yan Wenliang's oil painting Sunrise at the South Lake led the auction.

Top1 Priced Lot: Sunrise at the South Lake of Yan Wenliang

The oil painting Sunrise at the South Lake is the cover work of this night show. It was created by Yan Wenliang during his lectures at the Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts (now is the China Academy of Art) in 1964. The red boat in the South Lake of the painting is the only party-building theme of Yan Wenliang's works. It was estimated at CNY ¥7.8 to12 million before the auction. After more than 60 fierce bids, it finally won the auction with a price of CNY ¥27.83 million, and broke the personal auction record of Yan Wenliang in 2010.

Top2 Priced Lot: Taihu Fishing Boat of Liu Haisu

Liu Haisu donated all of his major works to the country during his lifetime. This presenting Taihu Fishing Boat has participated in Liu Haisu's retrospective exhibitions of different historical periods for five times. The lines and colors of the picture are full of passion, with heavy and complementary colors are used juxtaposed, which has a delightful visual beauty. It was estimated at CNY ¥18.5-28.5 million before the auction, and finally sold at CNY ¥23.23 million, making it the second highest-priced lot in the field, and the Top3 of Liu Haisu’s personal representative work was created.

Top3 Priced Lot: Early Spring in the South of Wu Guanzhong

Early Spring in the South is the representative work of Wu Guanzhong. The contrast of black and white makes the painting present abstract meaning and full of oriental mood. It was estimated at CNY ¥12 to 18 million before the auction and finally sold at CNY ¥17.825 million. In addition, Wu Guanzhong's 6 works have all been sold, among which Peonies and Spring Came Stealthly has entered the tens of millions club.

Hu Shanyu sets his personal auction record

Hu Shanyu is good at depicting still lives and landscapes, and his figurative works are rare. A Girl in Green Sweater is Hu Shanyu's most important representative of large-scale portrait paintings in early 1940s, showing his pursuit of solving the difficulties faced by Chinese painting through learning the Western art. The painting was estimated at CNY ¥4.5-6.5 million before the auction, and finally sold for CNY ¥10.12 million, breaking Hu Shanyu's personal auction record, and its transaction price reached 4.4 times higher than the price of Hu Shanyu's previous most expensive work.

Chinese Opera: Archery of Wu Dayu was sold for CNY ¥12.075 million over the estimated price range, and the Nude of Wu Zuoren was sold for CNY ¥9.43 million, making it one of his personal top 10 list. Artists such as Sun Zongwei, Xu Xingzhi and Hoo Mo Jong have performed well. In addition, Chu Teh-Chun's Dominated Matter was estimated at CNY ¥8-12 million before the auction, and eventually became unsold. Contemporary Art Evening Sale of Guardian in Beijing


Contemporary Art Evening Sale was presented after the 20th Century Art Evening Sale, focusing on promoting the backbone of Chinese contemporary art. A total of 11 pieces were sold out of 23 works in the whole auction, with a sold-by-lot rate of 47.8% and total turnover of 89.953 million. Among them, Zhou Chunya's Rocks And Clouds and Mao Yan's Black Rose Of Memory Or Dance were sold for CNY ¥43.7 million and CNY ¥20.7 million, respectively, contributing nearly 71.6% of the turnover of the auction.

Top1 Priced Lot: Rocks And Clouds of Zhou Chunya

Rocks And Clouds is the largest work of Zhou Chunya's "Mountain Rocks" series. It was estimated at CNY ¥28 to 38 million before the auction. After more than 20 round of fierce bidding, it was hammer at CNY ¥38 million, and the transaction price was 43.7 million including commission fee. While Rocks And Clouds led the auction with high prices, it also updated Zhou Chunya's personal representative work Top4. In addition, 5 pieces of Zhou Chunya's exquisite products were presented in this field, and 4 of them were sold.

Top2 Priced Lot: Black Rose Of Memory Or Dance of Mao Yan

Mao Yan has attracted the attention from worldwide for his conceptual portrait painting, and set his personal record in October 2020. Black Rose Of Memory Or Dance was created in 1996 and is a large-scale exquisite work of Mao Yan's "Portrait of Friends" stage. It was estimated at CNY ¥18 to 28 million before the auction, and finally sold for 20.7 million, becoming Mao Yan's second highest-priced lot.

Top3 Priced Lot: Girl With Mondrian of Liu Ye

Liu Ye, who was born in Beijing at 1964 that has attracted the attention of the market in 2019. The oil painting Girl With Mondrian with unique personal style was estimated at CNY ¥ 6.8 to 8.8 million before the auction, and finally sold for 7.82 million, becoming the top 3 high-priced lot in this field.

Wordless Monument of Yuan Yunsheng was sold for CNY ¥4.025 million, and Li Tianyuan's Letter was sold for 1.84 million, both of which updated his Top3 personal representative work. Among the 5 works of Zhang Xiaogang, 4 of pieces from early period were unsold. Contemporary Art Evening Sale ( II ) of Guardian in Beijing

This special session focused on masterpieces from the "70s and 80s" post-age artists with great development potential, and the sales are eye-catching. Kang Haitao is one of the representative figures of the leading artists born in 1970s. His works are mainly landscape and evening scene. The pre-sale estimate of Vine-climbing House was estimated at CNY ¥400,000-600,000. After fierce bidding, it was sold at 1.058 million, which was 2.6 times higher than the appraisal, breaking the record set by Kang Haitao in October.

Guardian took the lead in 20th Century & Contemporary Art matinee market at 2 pm, which gathered 166 pieces of exquisite pieces and finally sold 124 pieces, with a sold-by-lot rate of 74.7%, with a total turnover of CNY ¥34.84155 million. The top three lot with the most expensive prices in this field were from Fang Junbi, Zhang Langlang and Liu Ye. Fang Junbi is an important female painter in the history of art in the 20th century, and a pioneer in the process of promoting the transformation of Chinese painting to modernity. Her oil painting Winter Day was sold for CNY ¥2.415 million, winning the top spot on the day sale; Zhang Langlang's Lotus In My Heart was sold at 5.1 times the ultra-low estimate of CNY ¥1.84 million, setting his personal auction record; Liu Ye's work Girl Holding A Balloon also sold over the estimate.
