2021 Beijing Gallery Report——Access to New Collectors

In 2021, Beijing galleries connected with over 600 new collectors, an increase of approximately 55% compared to 2020. Both ranges of galleries gained 10 to 20 new collectors, and over 20 new collectors are on the rise. 

These new collectors mainly come from the following six fields: finance, technology, film and media, real estate, medicine, and manufacturing, with the finance industry leading the way, with 88% of galleries having new collectors from the finance industry. 

  1. Amount of New Collectors Beijing Galleries Have Access to
  •  Galleries with less than 5 new collectors accounted for 16%, down 24% year-on-year
  •  Galleries with 510 new collectors accounted for 38%, down 8%  year-on-year
  •  Galleries with 1020 new collectors accounted for 22%, up 20%  year-on-year
  •  Galleries with 20 or more new collectors accounted for 24%, an increase of 12%  year-on-year

Note:  Twelve Beijing galleries in the survey disclosed that they have gained over 20 new collectors in their client base, which include: White Space, Hive Center for Contemporary Art, Tang Contemporary Art, Line Gallery, Asia Art Center, SPURS Gallery, ArtDepot, Tabula Rasa Gallery, Taihe Art Gallery, Ginkgo Space, Mebo Space, and Magician Space. 

2. Percentage of New Collectors in the Client Base of Beijing Galleries

  •  The number of galleries with less than 10% of new collectors accounts for 10%, down 10% year-on-year.
  •  The number of galleries with 10-20% new collectors accounts for 38%, an increase of 16% year-on-year.
  •  The number of galleries with 20%-30% new collectors accounts for 24%, down 12% year-on-year.
  •  The Number of galleries with more than 30% new collectors accounts for 28%, up 6% year-on-year.

Note: A comparison of the 2020 and 2021 shows that fewer galleries had a fewer percentage of new collectors and more galleries had a higher rate of new collectors, indicating that the proportion of new collectors in Beijing galleries is showing an upward trend.

3. Beijing Galleries' New Collectors' Professional Backgrounds (Multiple Choice)

  •  88% of galleries gained new collectors from the financial industry.
  •  62% of galleries gained new collectors from the technology industry.
  •  62% of galleries gained new collectors from the culture and media industry.
  •  50% of galleries gained new collectors from the real estate industry.
  •  38% of galleries gained new collectors from the pharmaceutical industry.
  •  32% of galleries gained new collectors from the manufacturing industry.
  •  38% of galleries gained new collectors from other industries.

Note: In 2021, new collectors came from six major fields, including finance, technology, culture and media, real estate, medicine, and manufacturing, with finance being the largest source of new collectors for galleries, followed by technology and culture and media, both accounting for more than 60%.

4. Methods Employed by Beijing Galleries to Expand Their Client Base (multiple choice)

  •  88% of the galleries reached new clients through old clients' introduction.
  •  84% of galleries expanded their client bases through art fairs.
  •  72% of galleries attracted new clients with invitations to exhibition openings.
  •  40% of galleries reached new clients through online platforms.
  •  24% of the galleries reached new clients through other means.

Note: Among a variety of different gallery expenses, 36% of galleries have dedicated expenses for collectorrelationship maintenance, and more than half of the galleries reached new clients through old client introductions, art fairs, and exhibition openings, which are the top three effective ways.
