2021 Beijing Gallery Report——Artists Working with Galleries in Beijing

22 Dec 2022, 16:40

The relationship between the gallery and the artist is that between the agent and the artist. In general, there can be two ways of cooperation: short-term or one-time; the other is long-term and exclusive, or what the industry calls representation. A gallery that represents an artist will need to promote the artist for a long time and usually will keep representing the artist's work for three to five years; this is an exclusive relationship and a long-term, stable relationship. Long-term representation enables the gallery to have more fixed partners. Through various ways to boost an artist's popularity, a gallery's operation will be equipped with promotion, therefore becoming a professional and academic gallery.

From an artist's perspective, gallery support provides financial security for their artistic creations, allowing them to focus on their work, avoiding the distraction of tedious chores, and enhancing artistic excellence. In 2021, 46% of Galleries in Beijing had financial expenses to support artists' creations.
