2021 Beijing Gallery Report——Overall Sales

1. Annual Sales

The Beijing art gallery market showed a positive upward trend, with total sales in the primary market far exceeding that of 2020. Based on available data from the survey, the total sales in the primary market of the members of Art Gallery Association Beijing was around CNY 1.027 billion in 2021, an increase of CNY 0.287 billion, or 38.8%, compared with the total sales of CNY 0.74 billion in 2020.

Based on available data from the survey, the participating Beijing galleries can be classified into the following six ranges of annual sales, from CNY 1 million or less to CNY 50 million or more:

  • 14% of the galleries are in the range of CNY 1 million or less in 2021, are down 3% year-over-year;
  • 32% of the galleries are in the range of CNY 1 – 5 million in 2021, are down 4% year-over-year, representing the largest share of the sales distribution;
  • 28% of the galleries are in the range of CNY 5 – 10 million in 2021, are up 3% year-over-year, representing the second largest share of the sales distribution;
  • 10% of the galleries are in the range of CNY 10 – 30 million in 2021;
  • 6% of the galleries are in the range of CNY 30 – 50 million in 2021;
  • 10% of the galleries are in the range of CNY 50 million or more in 2021.

    Galleries with annual sales of CNY10 to 50 million and above in 2021 account for 26% of the total number of participating Beijing galleries, are up 4% year-on-year. Therefore, They are considered the leading institutions in the art gallery industry. The main reasons for the increase in total sales of Beijing galleries in 2021 include: firstly, the general increase in art sales in 2021; Secondly, the stable operation, and especially the significant growth, of the leading galleries in 2021, which contribute a major share to the overall growth of Beijing galleries, given their large sales base.

2. Independent Art spaces Set up by Beijing Galleries in Other Cities

By the end of 2021, 18 Beijing galleries had set up independent art exhibition spaces in other cities, accounting for 36% of the total Beijing galleries.

More than a third of Beijing galleries have established branches in other cities or regions.  Some galleries chose first-tier cities such as Shanghai or Shenzhen, while others chose China's new first-tier cities such as Chengdu.
