On January 27, 2022, Sotheby's New York "Master Paintings & Sculpture Part I" successfully concluded, led by Botticelli's "The Man Of Sorrows", which sold for US$45,419,700 (about 288 million RMB) , became the artist's second most expensive work (in 2021, Botticelli's  "Portrait Of A Young Man Holding A Roundel" was sold at Sotheby's New York for US$92,184,000 (about 590 million RMB), setting the artist's personal record).

Botticelli was a very important painter in Florence during the Italian Renaissance. This rare masterpiece "The Man Of Sorrows" was created in the late 15th/early 16th century and is a masterpiece of the painter in his later years.

The theme of this work is the symbol of Christianity, showing a humanized and modern image of Christ. Unlike most portraits of the Renaissance, Botticelli's Christ looks directly at the viewer with sharp eyes, and the angel in the halo above him holds "The Instruments of Passion" and uses it with The interpretation of the grey monochromatic painting (Grisaille) creates a sculptural solemnity and is full of a very modern visual effect.
