Beijing Gallry Report 2020 — Employees

At the end of 2020. ArtPro and Beijing Art Gallery Association launched a questionnaire survey on the Beijing Art Gallery Association members to discuss the current situation and development of art galleries. We review and analyze this particular period to find out the trend and prospect of art galleries. Members of the Beijing Gallery Association are the core and the essential components of the Beijing gallery industry. This survey represents the overall situation of Beijing and China's gallery industry.

This report will make a comprehensive analysis and explanation from the following seven aspects: annual business situation of the galleries in 2020, business model, employment of the gallery staff, the quantity and quality of exhibitions, participation in the Art Fair, new collectors obtaining approaches, and gallery promotion methods.

The third part: the essential quality of gallery operators

In 2020. some of the Beijing galleries are still recruiting new employees despite the tremendous operating pressure. There are about 500 employees in total. In a small gallery economy with an average of 10 employees, every employee is a valuable asset to the gallery. When talking about employees, almost all gallery owners say that excellent talents are significant for the gallery's development.

1.Overall number of staff in Beijing Gallery

The number of gallery staff ranges from less than 5 to more than 20

Galleries with more than 21 employees accounted for 11%;

Galleries with more than 11-20 employees accounted for 14%;

Galleries with 6-10 employees or more accounted for 45%;

Galleries with less than five employees account for 30%.

2.General situation of the education level of staff in Beijing gallery

At present, the starting point of gallery employees' education level is undergraduate education. Undergraduate and master's degrees dominated the whole industry. Among the employees, 55% had bachelor's degrees, and 45% had master's degree, with only 10%.

3. Professionalism of employees in Beijing Gallery

The number of graduates from China's top ten art colleges is relatively abundant every year, and many of them choose to work in Beijing's art district. With the increasing professionalism of Beijing gallery industry, more and more professionals are willing to work in the gallery. At the same time, in recent years, more and more galleries are open to the public to recruit talents.

In the gallery industry, where the artistic atmosphere is highly concentrated, various talents will be introduced. The proportion of art-related personnel is an important measure of gallery professionalism.

Among them, art-related personnel account for less than 20% of the galleries, accounting for about 15% of the total number of galleries;

Galleries with less than 40% art-related personnel accounted for about 35% of the total number of galleries;

galleries with less than 60% of art-related personnel accounted for about 50% of the total number of galleries;

4. Stability of employees in Beijing Gallery

Gallery business needs long-term stable communication with collectors, long-term tracking, and understanding of collectors' needs and changes. The number of sales and profits of the gallery are closely related to the stability of most staff, especially in its user experience. In expanding the team, these mature galleries must retain a trusted core team.

The stability of the employees in the art industry is high, which is very important for the gallery's development.

38% of the galleries have been employed for more than five years;

22% of galleries with 3-5 years working experience

37% of the staff have been on duty for 1-3 years

3% of the galleries have been employed for one year or less
