ANOMALY introduces Japanese-born artists from different generations - Noe Aoki, Ushio Shinohara, and Tiger Tateishi - who continue to challenge and transcend traditional notions of art in different ways. Aoki (b. 1958, resides in Saitama) has been working consistently with iron, taking on the "tradition" of sculpture. Modern abstract iron sculptures occupy space and intimidate the viewer. While competing with the environment, Her works, on the other hand, do not conquer the space being released from its original solidity and filled with lightness. Shinohara (b. 1932, resides in New York) formed the "Neo-Dadaism Organizers" in 1960, together with Masunobu Yoshimura, Genpei Akasegawa, Shusaku Arakawa, and others to create a new "anti-art" that deviated from existing art expression. Around 1959, he began his signature "boxing paintings”, in which he creates paintings by soaking a rolled cloth with paint then punching the support against it. Tiger Tateishi (born in 1941, deceased in 1998) made a debut in the art world in his early 20s for his paintings and participated in numerous exhibitions. While making a success in the art world, he began to draw manga. Just when his manga became very popular, he suddenly relocated himself to Milan, Italy. He developed his unique style of painting utilising the format of manga, and achieved a pictorial surface with stories unfolded in a linear sense of time, alongside with working as an illustrator for Ettore Sottsass. Although being asked to work with many other majour companies in Italy, he moved back to Japan and continued working in multiple media until his passing. We will also introduce online exclusive works from our artists including Kosuke Nagata who is currently in Seoul for Exchange Residency Program with SeMA Nanji Residency, Miyuki Tsugami, and others.
