Preface

We are accustomed to measuring cities with our gaze—towering buildings, dense traffic, and flickering neon lights form our preconceived impressions of urban life. Yet, within this vast machine, there exists another overlooked dimension: "the blind spot." Yan Man, like a keen "urban scavenger," shifts his gaze to strip the urban symbols of their functional context, capturing fragments of light, sound, and memory. He transforms them into visible forms, echoing Paul Klee's words: "Art does not reproduce the visible; rather, it makes visible."

Yan Man possesses a unique perception and expression of light. In his works, light is no longer an abstract physical phenomenon but a concrete form imbued with emotion. The glow of streetlights blossoms into flowers under his brush, the trails of car headlights are depicted as sharp blades, and intersecting beams of light weave into a net that captures memories. Through his art, we are prompted to reexamine the overlooked details of everyday life, discovering the hidden beauty and meaning behind them. These elements are no longer vague symbols in the urban backdrop but become carriers of emotion and memory, connecting individuals to the city, and the past to the present.

Perhaps, in these neglected corners, we can find another way to understand the city and the unspoken connections between us and the urban environment. The answers may lie hidden in those unobserved glimmers of light.
