TRIUMPH GALLERY is pleased to announce the debut solo exhibition of artist Yang Maoyuan, The Distant Realm, from April 26 to June 8, 2025. Marking the inaugural collaboration between the artist and the gallery, this exhibition systematically examines Yang's most recent theoretical explorations and technical advancements in painting. As a paradigmatic figure in Chinese contemporary art, Yang's multidisciplinary practice spans sculpture, installation, painting, photography, and videography.
The exhibition's conceptual framework originates from the artist's philosophical inquiry into spatial dualism: The Distant Realm embodies a conceptual space that bridges physical reality and perceptual illusion, operating as both territorial and civilizational entities and metaphors imbued with psychological depth and philosophical resonance.Yang's oeuvre synthesizes decades of introspective research and phenomenological engagement, particularly his anthropological investigations into historical human traces within traditional cultural regions, combined with sustained immersion in natural landscapes. Eschewing definitive conclusions about these historical-natural legacies, the artist reconstitutes them through formal innovation, transforming cultural sediments into primary material for aesthetic reconstruction.
This exhibition centers on the artist's painting practice, constructing a multidimensional interpretive framework to unravel the generative logic of his distinctive visual language system. Building upon three decades of observations gathered through borderland journeys, his philosophical meditations on time and life, and meticulous contemplation of light and color, unfolds multilayered interpretations of geography, civilization, and cognition.
