Ke Yi · Behind the Scenes Project: Episode III — Zhang Mao's Personal Project "DUNE" will open on August 9th. This exhibition will present a solo installation work by the artist, which uses the eternal law of rotation as its formal language to guide viewers to a void but unavoidable "destination". The extension will continue until September 24th.

This work is inspired by Frank Herbert's science fiction novel of the same name. The "spice" in "Dune" is a mysterious substance that simultaneously serves as an energy source and a carrier of consciousness. It shapes the vision of the prophet and also rewrites the logic of reality. In Zhang Mao's installation work of the same name, this fictional substance serves as the starting point, but it is not directly replicated. The artist attempts to weave multiple images and structures together, evoking the audience's rethinking of the real structure in a sensual, ambiguous and non-linear way.

The mechanical movement in the work plays a paradoxical role: it is both a symbol of modernity and unexpectedly approaches witchcraft like behavior through continuous repetition. Dunes slowly form over time, and may also disintegrate instantly due to a gust of wind or an intervention - like the prophet in a novel, revealing the future while also dissolving certainty. Between the generation and dissipation of this infinite cycle, perhaps the faint light of the "spice illusion" can be captured: it is both a tremor of energy and a concrete manifestation of nothingness.

This work has previously been exhibited in many art galleries and institutions across the country. In this exhibition, the artist has specially recreated the works based on the venue - a nearly 20-meter-high circular structure silo space, establishing a closer response relationship between the space and the works. The circle itself is a closed loop, and "Ring: Dune" will also take this opportunity to lead everyone into a vortex about order and lost.
