Auction introduction: To mark the inauguration of our new Asia Pacific headquarters at The Henderson, Christie’s presents the 20th Century Day Sale with selection of works by celebrated artists encapsulating the revolutionary exchange between East and West in the history of modern art. The sale will be led by a vibrant and powerful painting by Zao Wou-Ki from 2006, exuding vitality and energy through a rare palette of saturated pink and orange. It is followed by a never-before-seen jewel kept in private hands for over 60 years: one of only three known and published paintings by Sanyu depicting a globe de mariée. Works by abstract masters such as Kazuo Shiraga, Chu Teh-Chun and Georges Mathieu are offered in dialogue with one another to showcase the powerful synthesis of colour and brushwork. Further highlights include iconic works by Korean artists Lee Ufan, Kim Tschang-yeul and Rhee Seundja. The sale also features paintings by prominent artists from Southeast Asia. A major painting by Filipino woman artist Anita Magsaysay-Ho will lead the section, alongside Balinese scenes by Miguel Covarrubias and Adrien-Jean le Mayeur de Merprès, together with an exciting lineup of works by Singaporean pioneers and Vietnamese masters, including Cheong Soo Pieng, Nguyen Tuong Lan, Mai Trung Thu, Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam.
