Auction introduction: This spring, Sotheby’s Hong Kong Fine Chinese Paintings auction offers a sophisticated selection of 230 works. The collection from notable political figure Chang Chun (Zhang Qun, 1889-1990), which has been privately held for nearly a century, will be presented to the public for the first time. The sale also features pieces from Hong Kong and overseas collections, such as paintings from the M. K. Lau Collection and Huang Binhong’s late landscapes from a private Hong Kong collection. Joining the refined collections are highlights including Wu Guanzhong’s A Sketch of Five Pines of Mount Tai, Zhang Daqian’s Landscape of a Mountain in Autumn formerly from the collection of Lo Chia-luen, Wu Hufan’s Running Stream by the Pines, and Visiting Friend painted by Dai Xi for Chen Jieqi. Altogether, this line-up of both traditional and modern tastes, illustrated a multi-faceted view of modern Chinese paintings. Also offered this season is Zhang Daqian’s fresh-to-market Pink Lotuses on Gold Screen from the C. S. Loh family collection. Bearing the highest estimate of any work offered by the Fine Chinese Paintings department at Sotheby’s, the piece will be presented at Sotheby’s 50th Anniversary Sale on 5 April.
