Auction introduction: Sotheby's Germany is delighted to announce its upcoming sale of Modern & Contemporary Art in Cologne. The auction will be open for bidding from 1–7 September 2022. As the main auction of the autumn sale season in Cologne, Modern & Contemporary Art will showcase a range of works by nationally and internationally celebrated artists of the 20th and 21st centuries. The sale will bring together an exceptional selection of paintings, works on paper and sculptures by sought-after Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary artists, including Katharina Grosse and Albert Oehlen, Walter Stöhrer and Jörg Immendorff to Alexej von Jawlensky and Walter Dexel. The Contemporary Art section is led by a stunning relief from 1970 (R 70-41) by the Dutch artist Jan Schoonhoven, alongside a beautiful nail painting (Reihung, 1962) by one of the most important German artists, Günther Uecker, as well as an extraordinary canvas (Draußen) from 1985 by another well-known German artist, Albert Oehlen. These works are further complemented by two impressive sculptures (Raumplastik, 1955-56 & Flächenbahn, circa 1957) by the renowned German sculptor Norbert Kricke, who would have celebrated his 100th birthday this year. In the Modern Art section, there will be a fine selection of wonderful expressive paintings, such as Alexej von Jawlensky's Still Life [Azalea] from 1936 and an early work Im Bois de St. Cloud, Paris from 1914 by Walter Dexel. In addition, there will be an exquisite selection of works on paper to discover, from Heinz Mack and Lyonel Feininger to Erich Heckel and Hannah Höch, led by a colourful abstract composition by Georg Scholz Die Strasse from 1919.
