Auction introduction: Christie’s is honoured to present the most important Western American Art collection ever to be offered at auction – Visions of the West: The William I. Koch Collection. A man of deep and varied interests, William I. Koch is an industrialist, a scientist, winner of the America’s Cup and much more. His lifelong passion for art, including that of the American West, has resulted in a collection that is recognised and acclaimed by museums and collectors worldwide. Leading the Evening Sale are renowned masterpieces by American icon Frederic Remington, including his magnificent nocturnes Coming to the Call and An Argument with the Town Marshall alongside his triumphant sculptures The Broncho Buster and Coming Through the Rye. Charles Marion Russell’s cinematic painting Dust and rare bronze The Buffalo Hunt exemplify the best of the “Cowboy Artist.” Paintings, sculptures and works on paper span over a century of American history—from Alfred Jacob Miller’s The Buffalo Hunt of circa 1850 to N. C. Wyeth’s Oil Patch of 1980–81. The sale also includes iconic nocturnes by Frank Tenney Johnson, stunning works on paper by Henry Farny and vibrant illustrations by N. C. Wyeth, alongside many of the most celebrated artists of the West.
