Auction introduction: The Modern and Contemporary Southeast Asian Evening sale features artworks by some of the region’s pioneering figures and sought-after contemporary voices. Following the record breaking results in July this year, the October auction includes spectacular silk pieces by Vietnamese masters Le Pho, Mai Trung Thu and a magnificent lacquer screen by Pham Hau. Other fresh-to-market highlights capture the spirit of local life in the artist’s signature styles, including Sudjana Kerton’s Indonesian Village Life, Cheong Soo Pieng’s Going to Market and Hendra Gunawan’s Duck Vendors. Three works from the collection of a prominent collector lead the contemporary section of the sale, including a striking Handiwirman Saputra painting executed in 2012. Sotheby's is honoured to present three works by Adrien Jean Le Mayeur de Merprès from a single owner grouping, which represent a culmination of two decades of collecting and reveal the beauty of Bali and the artist’s riveting legacy in Southeast Asian art history.
