Auction introduction: Spanning five centuries of European art, the November Old Masters sale includes a rich array of paintings, sculpture and drawings across a multitude of themes.
Highlights include Charles-Antoine Coypel’s theatrical Renaud abandonnant Armide, which comes from the Rothschild Collection and previously hung in the hôtel Massaran. This will be offered alongside a newly discovered painting by Jean-François de Troy of Judith tenant la tête d’Holopherne, which adds a previously unseen subject to the artist’s oeuvre; a large scale collaboration between the Flemish artists David Teniers and Jan Breughel the Younger of The Temptation of Saint Anthony within a Garland of Flowers; a rare depiction of the Immaculate Conception painted by Pieter Claeissens the Elder, with a fascinatingly intricate iconography; and a powerful portrait by Jacobus Levecq, which displays all the bravura application of paint learnt from his master, Rembrandt. Further highlights of the sale include a delicate pastel of a Figure allégorique, by the venetian Rosalba Carriera; an elegant pair of innovative scagliola panels depicting Italian port scenes, the work of Enrico Hugford; and an imposing classical bust, believed to represent Fluvia Plautilla
