Auction introduction: A rediscovered painting by the Renaissance master Agnolo Bronzino, recently restituted to the heirs of Ilse Hesselberger, will highlight Sotheby’s Masters Week marquee sale. Datable to about 1527, the portrait has descended in remarkably beautiful condition with unbroken provenance from the seventeenth century until today; its reemergence from relative obscurity marks an incredibly exciting addition to Bronzino’s oeuvre. Additional early Italian highlights include a gold ground panel by the Master of the Spinola Annunciation and a portrait by Sebastiano del Piombo. The auction will also include a large-scale painting by Melchior de Hondecoeter, a full-scale oil sketch of Helmingham Dell by John Constable, a 1627 portrait of Lope de Vega by Juan van der Hamen, a meticulously detailed floral still life by Gerard van Spaendonck, and a pastel portrait by Maurice-Quentin de la Tour of Marie Fel. Select highlights will be on view in Hong Kong (November 23-27), and London (December 2-7).
