As we approach the final chapter of the Victor Shaw Collection of Chinese Jades this November, we traverse a year-long journey to unveil the interplay of emptiness and solidity in Chinese jade carving art. This collection is a concentrated reflection of the taste of collectors from the 1960s to the 1980s, with its selection and dating reflecting the understanding of ancient jade in that era. The older generation of collectors focused on the changes in patina, appreciated the finesse of carving, and judged the quality of the collection accordingly.
The Part 4 encompasses a grand synthesis of the varied themes from the previous three parts. It includes a wide range of types, from animal carvings and scholar's objects to jewelries and pendants. Such a diversity of functional and thematic jade carvings, when viewed from an artistic perspective, invariably oscillates between the realms of emptiness and solidity. This resonates with and complements other categories of Chinese art, continuing a time-honored tradition of artistic interconnectedness.
