Auction introduction: Following the success of the 2025 debut auction The David Hockney Sale: The Arrival of Spring, Sotheby’s is delighted to present the final selection of Hockney’s iPad drawings from this distinguished private collection. This concluding instalment, comprising 16 large-scale works from The Arrival of Spring in Woldgate, East Yorkshire, 2011, will be presented at auction on 5th March at 11:30 AM GMT ahead of the Contemporary Day Sale. Created en plein air as early spring unfurled across the Yorkshire Wolds, these works capture the shifting light and quiet drama of a landscape studied in real time. While remaining deeply committed to observation and draughtsmanship, Hockney embraced new technology in the making of this series, using the iPad to rethink both medium and method. This auction provides collectors the opportunity to acquire key works from this innovative series, many of which have not previously appeared on the secondary market.
