Auction introduction: This March, as part of our 20th/21st Century Art auction series, Christie’s presents Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale. Leading the sale are a striking pair of Andy Warhol’s celebrated ‘society portraits’, depicting Cardi Smith, as well as a remarkable Vesuvius painting — the artist’s only monochrome depiction of the famous volcano on this scale. Presenting an exciting array of works by the most influential artists of the 20th and 21st century, the auction features important paintings by George Condo and Anselm Kiefer, as well as outstanding works on paper by Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring and Cy Twombly. This season Christie’s is delighted to collaborate with Great Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) to deliver BUILD IT, BEAT IT, a dedicated selection of 29 artworks by 28 leading contemporary artists to be offered on behalf of GOSH. Great Ormond Street Hospital is one of Europe’s leading hospitals and research centres dedicated to the medical care of children, and is building a new, world-class Children’s Cancer Centre at the hospital in London. Generously donated works by artists such as Peter Doig, Jadé Fadojutimi and Tracey Emin will be auctioned to benefit this transformative initiative. Christie’s will also present Wolfgang Tillmans: The Way We Look, a collection of 15 photographic works by the renowned German artist, all appearing on the market for the first time from a distinguished private collection. The works will be offered across the Post-War and Contemporary Art Day Sale and Online sale from 26 February to 12 March.
