Auction introduction: Prints and Multiples offer works by many of the greatest artists of the 19th and 20th centuries. Early highlights include Erich Heckel’s rare woodcut Paar, 1910, a masterpiece of German Expressionist printmaking, Pablo Picasso’s linocut Portrait de Jacqueline au chapeau de paille multicolore, 1962, and Joan Miró’s monumental Makemono, 1950–55, a lithographic masterpiece printed on Chanton silk inspired by Chinese and Japanese scrolls, measuring an astonishing 10 metres. Modern prints will also include works by Marc Chagall and M.C. Escher. A private collection with a focus on technique highlights the section devoted to modern British prints, featuring Bridget Riley’s early optical screenprint Untitled (Based on Movement in Squares), 1962, and Frank Auerbach’s dense, psychological etched portrait of Lucian Freud, 1981, with prints by David Hockney, Francis Bacon and Paula Rego representing the best of British. Early highlights of post-war American printmaking include Dan Flavin’s minimalist series (To Don Judd, colorist), 1986–87, and the seminal 11 Pop Artists, Volume I, 1965, with contributions by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Tom Wesselmann.
