Auction introduction: Last October, our sale Avant-garde incl. Thinking Italian was held at the same time as the first edition of Paris+ par Art Basel, achieving record sales of €66.7 M. On 4 April, in the leadup to Art Paris Fair’s 25th anniversary, Christie’s Paris will once again align itself with one of the key events of the European art market by organizing its inaugural Spring evening sale - Art Impressionniste et Moderne: Œuvres choisies, including Wave of Dreams. A Private Surrealist Collection -, the highlight of an entire week dedicated to 20th Century art.
This sale will start with the section WAVE OF DREAMS. A PRIVATE SURREALIST COLLECTION, comprising ten remarkable Surrealist artworks, reflecting the private collector’s passion and his connoisseur’s eye for top quality artworks by Magritte, Miro, Man Ray, Picabia, Ernst, Miro and Calder. This unique collection will be followed by a highly selective sale that includes a Tête d'homme (III) by Pablo Picasso unseen on the market for over 35 years; Digue et lumières d'Ostende, a beautifully executed artwork by Léon Spilliaert from 1909 that has remained in the same family; a striking portrait of a woman by Kees Van Dongen from the 1920s; and Shacountala, a recently rediscovered drawing by Camille Claudel representing her famous sculpture L’Abandon.
