Auction introduction: Sotheby’s New York is excited to announce the second installment of Between Thought and Expression: Works from the Collection of A.G. Rosen, a single-owner online presentation of over 120 works from Mr. Rosen’s esteemed collection. Borrowed from Lou Reed’s lyrics for a song by The Velvet Underground, the title invokes that “between thought and expression lies a lifetime.” Amassed over the last five decades, The Rosen Collection is a powerful testament to one collector’s aesthetic intuition, endless curiosity, and personal commitment to championing artists and galleries. This auction represents a cross-section of a collection that explores meaning and mark making across the realms of representation and abstraction throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. Characterized by its incredible breadth and depth, The Rosen Collection embraces diverse themes within Contemporary Art: from Pop Art and its master practitioners including Andy Warhol and John Wesley, to the unapologetically madcap Chicago Imagists like Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, and Roger Brown, important voices in abstraction including Elizabeth Murray, Jacqueline Humphries, and Amy Sillman, accomplished contemporary realists like Lois Dodd, Catherine Murphy and Maureen Gallace, and the very best of celebrated photographers like Catherine Opie, Shirin Neshat, and Sally Mann. Highlights from the sale will be on view in our 4th floor galleries from December 7th through 12th with an online-only sale beginning at 2pm on December 12th. Please contact us directly for any questions or condition report requests.
