Sotheby's Germany is delighted to announce its upcoming sale of Modern & Contemporary Art in Cologne. The auction will be open for bidding from 14–21 November 2023.
As the main auction of the winter sale season in Cologne, the auction will showcase a range of works by locally and internationally celebrated artists. This sale will bring together works by sought-after artists from Impressionist and Modern to Contemporary art and set in dialogue an exceptional selection of paintings, works on paper and sculptures. Offered in the auction are two masterpieces by 'Die Brücke' artist Emil Nolde accompanied by fellow Expressionists Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Christian Rohlfs as well as the well-known German impressionist garden painter Max Liebermann.
Further represented are American artists such as Robert Rauschenberg, Sam Francis, Roy Lichtenstein and Keith Heiring alongside early examples of Zero founders Otto Piene and Heinz Mack accompanied by fellow artist Adolf Luther and Bauhaus icons Josef Albers and Oskar Schlemmer as well as Schlemmer’s close friend Willi Baumeister, besides renowned German artists such as A.R. Penck, Albert Oehlen and Sigmar Polke. The sale is completed with works by female artists Katharina Grosse, famously known for bold coloured spray paintings, and Miriam Cahn who’s intimate and often semi-ambiguous figurative paintings have received outstanding recognition.
