Auction introduction: This December’s Old Master & 19th Century Paintings Evening Auction features a remarkable selection of works, spanning from the mid-fifteenth to the late-nineteenth centuries. Leading the auction are a painting of singular beauty by Sandro Botticelli held in the same family collection since acquired by Lady Wantage in 1904 and a rediscovered masterpiece by the celebrated Florentine Mannerist artist Rosso Fiorentino once owned by Catherine the Great. Other highlights include a compelling portrayal of Mary Magdalen by Artemisia Gentileschi and a celebrated depiction of a Spanish Pointer by George Stubbs, A.R.A., one of the artist’s most recognisable works. Also featured are a recently reunited triptych by Pieter I Claeissens, a distinguished portrait of the 6th Duke of Devonshire by Sir Thomas Lawrence, and a dynamic canvas by Eugène Delacroix that blends his experience in North Africa with his own Romantic vision. We are also delighted to offer an important drypoint by Rembrandt and a complete, particularly early set of Los Caprichos by Francesco José de Goya y Lucientes.
