Auction introduction: Spanning five centuries of European art, the Old Masters: Paintings, Drawings, Sculptures auction includes a rich array of works covering a wide variety of themes. The highlight of the sale is the rediscovered Still life with butterfly, apricots, grapes, medlar and peach by Adriaen Coorte. This enigmatic painting will be offered alongside the first oil portrait of the leader of the Haitian revolution, Toussaint Louverture, a painting by Nicolas de Largillierre, recovered by the Monuments Men at the end of the war and featured in their iconic photo on the steps of Neuschwanstein Castle, and a resplendent portrait of Isabelle de Valois, painted at the time of her marriage to Philip II of Spain. Sculpture is represented by bronzes from the famous Quentin collection, including works from the Renaissance to the 18th century, notably by the great Italian masters Francesco Fanelli and Massimiliano Soldani-Benzi. Marbles are also well represented by the Bust of Antoinette-Joséphine Davout d’Auerstaedt and Luigi Bienaimé’s graceful Dancing Bacchante. The graphic arts are also represented, with a study of the famous Barbes horse race by Géricault, and The Adoration of the Magi by Giovanni Battista Castello, one of Genoa’s most important Mannerist miniaturists.
