Auction introduction: Sotheby’s spring Photographs auction in New York features a wide selection of works from the 19th century to today. Photographers have utilized the medium in a multitude of ways since its invention, from the pioneering experimentations of Man Ray, to the color-drenched, poignant images by Nan Goldin, to the dramatic, digitally manipulated works by Cindy Sherman. This auction includes exemplary works by those photographers, as well by Ansel Adams, Sally Mann, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Irving Penn, Gordon Parks, Catherine Opie, Ed Ruscha, László Moholy-Nagy, and many more. Online bidding will be open from 1 to 10 April. A pre-sale exhibition of highlights will be on view at Sotheby’s New York, from 6-9 April.
