Auction introduction: Christie’s Antiquities sale in New York on 23 October features a diverse selection of objects from across the Mediterranean world, including works of art from ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian cultures, dating from the 3rd millennium BC to the 7th century AD. Highlights include an Egyptian bronze and gilt-wood ibis, a large Cycladic marble head and a Roman marble head of Dionysus. Also featured is a selection of objects from a private European collection, anchored by two important Egyptian works: a complete set of alabaster canopic jars for the priest Khakare and a large painted linen mummy portrait of a woman. Additional pieces include a Sardinian bronze archer, a Roman bronze portrait bust of a young man and an Egyptian alabaster headrest. All works will be on view at Christie’s Rockefeller Center galleries from 18 to 22 October.
