Auction introduction: Sotheby’s Fine Chinese Paintings is delighted to present over 200 exquisite modern Chinese paintings this Spring. Estimated around HK$200 million, highlights include Zhang Daqian’s six-foot splashed ink and colour landscape, ‘Misty Mountains of Qingcheng’, Xu Beihong’s gift to a Southeast Asian patron, ‘Drunken Zhong Kui’, and a series of Wu Guanzhong’s artworks covering a vast range of media such as watercolour, sketches and ink and colour paintings, including ‘Wisteria’, which has participated in various large scale exhibitions of the artist. This sale also features works from various collections with impeccable provenances, including Redologist professor Kang and Jessica Chao’s collection of works gifted from other redologists such as Yu Pingbo, Zhou Ruchang and Qi Gong, etc., revolutionary Huang Longsheng’s collection of calligraphies of political leaders Sun Wen and Hu Hanmin, Sir Run Run Shaw's property, Feng Kanghou’s family collection, and gifts from Zhang Daqian to his friends in America and Brazil. Lastly, headlining the sale is Zhang Daqian’s extraordinary masterpiece, 'Landscape after Wang Ximeng'. Fresh to the market, this blue and green landscape was painted in 1948 during the pinnacle of the artist’s height of traditional elaborated landscapes for his exhibition in Shanghai in the same year. It was then added to Shanghai socialite Sun Zhifei’s collection and has since been passed down through the family. Apart from exhibiting temporarily in Shanghai Museum and the National Art Museum of China in 1983, this masterpiece has not been shown to the public for forty years.
