Auction introduction: On 28 May 2022, Christie's Hong Kong will present the Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy sale, offering global collections and timeless masterpieces with historical, aesthetic and cultural significance, allowing collectors to acquire paintings that celebrate the historical art traditions of China. We are honoured to present the leading masterpiece of the sale - Washing Horses by Zhao Mengfu (1254-1322) as Catalogued in Shiqu Baoji, which was formerly in the collection of Emperor Qianlong and that of the Fujita Museum in Japan. Another masterpiece is Scholarly Gathering till Twilight by Xie Shichen (1487-1567), which spearheads a wide array of paintings and calligraphy by the Jiangnan literati of the Ming and Qing Dynasties, including Wen Zhengming, Dong Qichang and Jin Nong. Other highlights include Landscapes along the River by Yao Yunzai (16th-17th century), Landscape after Ni Zan by Wu Li (1632-1718), and Almanac of the Second Year of the Yongzheng Period. With exquisite works of imperial and literati themes and remarkable appeal, the Fine Chinese Classical Paintings and Calligraphy are not to be missed.
