Auction introduction: After the immensely successful launch of the series of sales dedicated to Marc Chagall in London, Christie’s Hong Kong is honoured to present the sale of Marc Chagall, Colour of Life: Works Formerly from the Artist’s Estate (Part 2).For the first time in Asia, a dedicated sale celebrating the enchanting world of Marc Chagall will bring together a rare grouping of works, formerly in the artist’s estate and never before offered for sale. There are few 20th century artists who combined such a sensuous enjoyment of painting with such a singular vision and freedom of imagination. This collection of 20 paintings and works on paper encompasses key strands from Chagall’s oeuvre, including: the emotional and spiritual connection with his homeland; the joy and beauty of nature; the nurturing artistic richness of Paris; and, art as a means of exploring personal and collective identities; and above all else, the profound strength of love. Not only the romantic love he portrays in the forms of floating couples or maternités, but the wider love that embraces all of mankind and all living things. While the subject of love continued to be central in Chagall’s art, its form shifted and changed in a manner that reflected the evolution of his own relationships, offering deep, profound statements on the nature of love and the authenticity of human values.
