Auction introduction: This July’s Old Master & 19th Century Paintings Evening Auction presents a remarkable selection of artworks spanning from the 14th to the late 19th centuries. Leading the sale are two extraordinary paintings by renowned 17th-century female artists: a signed and dated David with the head of Goliath by Artemisia Gentileschi that is monumental in scale and imposing in presence, as well as an intricately detailed still life by Clara Peeters that features a presumed self-portrait of the artist herself. Additional highlights include a rare 14th century Byzantine Icon of the Hodegetria Mother of God, a small yet striking late 15th century Burgundian portrait, contemporary self-portraits by the Dutch artists Dirck van Baburen and David de Haen, painted during their time in Rome, and a jewel-like genre scene by Godefridus Schalcken. Also featured are a beautiful, early interior by Vilhelm Hammershøi and a luminous and unlined maritime scene by Ivan Aivazovsky. A wonderful selection of early 17th century Northern paintings from the Collection of Baron and Baronne Bertrand de Giey will also be showcased as part of our offering this sale season.
