Auction introduction: The Impressionist and Modern Online sale brings together a spectrum of masters, spanning from the late 19th Century to the pre-war era, encompassing Impressionism, its post-impressionist followers, Orientalism, as well as the birth of Modernism from Cubism to the Vienna Secession and the emergence of abstraction. Elegantly tracing the chronological evolution of art through one of the most avant-garde periods in history, the sale highlights movements that precede today’s contemporary practices by more than a century. From Jean Arp, Pierre Bonnard, Victor Brauner, Henri Laurens and Fernand Léger to Henri Matisse, it showcases the many ways in which artists radically broke away from convention, redefining the aesthetic parameters of art through both innovative techniques and groundbreaking ideas. The sale further proudly represents female artists from the period, including Marie Laurencin, Jeanne Kosnick-Kloss, Chana Orloff, Irma Stern and Jeanne Selmersheim-Desgrange, whose distinctive voices shaped the artistic landscape of the Modern era. Comprising oil paintings, works on paper and sculptures, the selection demonstrates the breadth of materials and mediums through which these radical artistic visions came to life. Bidding will take place online from May 20–June 3, and will be on view at Christie’s salons, 9 avenue Matignon, from May 30–June 3, presenting a unique opportunity for collectors to discover these works in person.
