Auction introduction: Sotheby’s is delighted to unveil the beautiful Collection Michel Lequesne, which will be auctioned in Paris on June 5. Michel Lequesne began collecting in the 1950s and always bought directly from the artists or through historic French galleries such as the Galerie Daniel Cordier and the Galerie Pierre and from renown African art dealers such as Galerie Kamer or Bernard Dulon. Throughout his life, he gathered relentlessly the best examples of post-war abstraction and tribal art. His collection illustrates the perfect dialogue between post-war painting and African and Oceanic aesthetic, comprising a beautiful Barbe by Jean Dubuffet and an important 1954 Riopelle oil on canvas, alongside an extraordinary Bamana Figure and a unique Batoufam Kingdom Portrait Figure of the King Toukam. This collection bears witness to the curiosity and erudition of a passionate collector with a truly confident eye.
