Auction introduction: To celebrate 50 years in Asia, Sotheby’s Hong Kong is delighted and proud to present a distinguished line up of contemporary masterpieces from the East and West, consolidating our status as the world’s gateway to Asian art and culture, while offering exceptional artworks to Asian audiences. Leading our Contemporary Evening Sale on 5th April is an archetypal work by Yoshitomo Nara, In the Milky Lake, executed in 2012, in which Nara’s large-eyed little girl gazes out to the viewer, partly submerged in a milky expanse of delicately-layered paint. Unmissable highlights of the sale include iconic, chromatic examples by leading Western masters, Roy Lichtenstein and Gerhard Richter, and significant sculptural examples by Alexander Calder and Antony Gormley. Honoring our rich and successful history with Chinese contemporary art in Hong Kong, we are also excited to present a refined selection of Chinese contemporary art, including leading examples of works by Huang Yuxing and Hao Liang. Further, we are thrilled to present exceptionally rare works by Yayoi Kusama, counting a large-scale bronze pumpkin sculpture executed in 2014 and an infinity mirrored box from 2018, both seldom encountered at auction. This Spring, we are also excited to present a dazzling array of works by some of the most impressive and important artists of our generation, including the likes of Julien Nguyen, Matthew Wong, George Condo, Loie Hollowell and Jadé Fadojutimi.
