The Latest Record of Western Art in Chinese Mainland: Columns of Gerhard Richter reached 80.5 million in Auction

ArtPro News: on May 20, 2021, China Guardian Contemporary Art Night Show (I) and Gerhard Richter’s Columns were sold for 80.5 million yuan, which became the latest record of Western artworks in Chinese mainland after Keefer and Bai Nanzhun‘s work. Congratulations goes to China Guardian for the wonderful achievements. Columns is estimated at 60-80 million yuan, starting at 50 million yuan. After fierce bidding on the spot, it was finally sold with 70 million yuan and 80.5 million yuan as a commission. It has become the most expensive Western Art in Chinese Mainland. This is the second time that Columns was in auction. In October 2016, Sotheby's London was auctioned, and the deal was $3.63 million; This time, in China Guardian, it was sold for 80.5 million yuan, achieving three times in five years.

Richter's popularity in Asia did not start all at once. On October 6, 2020, Gerhard Richter's Portrait (649-2) was sold in Sotheby's Hong Kong for HK $214 million, which once ranked as "the most expensive western art auction in Asia" (this record was later broken by Baskia's Warrior of HK $323 million.
