Auction introduction: Sotheby’s is pleased to announce the Spring 2021 installment of our online auction series, Two Centuries: American Art. This auction will present paintings, sculptures and works on paper representative of the diverse subject matter and artistic styles that defined American Art through the 19th and 20th centuries. Leading the sale is a group of paintings from An Important American Collection which is highlighted by George Henry Durrie’s painting, On the Road to Boston, from 1861, a family portrait of the artist’s wife by Frank Weston Benson and additional examples by David Burliuk, Emil Carlsen, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Everett Shinn, John Sloan, Thomas Moran and Frederick Judd Waugh. A section of works by American illustrators include numerous examples by Dean Cornwell, Tom Lovell and Frank E. Schoonover. This auction will also present property from the Collection of Nelson Rockefeller, two works from The Collection of the Memorial Art Gallery, Rochester, New York, and a pair of works on paper by both Andrew Wyeth and Jamie Wyeth are being sold to benefit a charitable foundation.
