Auction introduction: Led by Georges Antoine Rochegrosse’s acclaimed Salon triptych La légende merveilleuse de la reine de Saba du roi Salomon, the European Art Part II auction offers a strong selection of fresh to the market paintings and sculpture by leading artists who reflect the extraordinary diversity of this pivotal period of art history. Additional highlights include an elegant head study by William Adolphe Bouguereau, two charming small-scale paintings from Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida, and a wonderful study by Jules Breton for one of the figures in his Salon painting La bénédiction des blés en Artois. There is a strong group of paintings by the Barbizon painters, including works by Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot, Théodore Rousseau and Narcisse Díaz de la Peña, and a broad selection of Sporting art, including paintings and works on paper. Sculptures in both marble and bronze round out the sale.
