Canadian-American abstract painter, one of the few female artists in the male-dominated movement in 1960s. Agnes Martin was born in Marklin, Saskatchewan, graduated from the Teachers College of Columbia University. She moved from Abstract Expressionism to Minimalism in her life time. Repetitive simple patterns and transparent high gray tones are Martin's icons. In 1998, she was awarded the National Art Medal by the National Art Donation.
