A modern Chinese painter of traditional Chinese painting. Born in Xiangtan County, Changsha Prefecture in Hunan Province, his original name was Qi Chunzhi, Qi Baishi worked as a woodworker in his early years, and later made a living of selling paintings, and settled in Beijing at the age of 57. He is good at painting flowers, birds, insects, fish, landscapes, and figures. His brushstrokes are strong with the moisture of inks, the colors are vivid and bright, the modeling is simple and vigorous with unsophisticated conception. Qi Baishi's calligraphy are of the interest of ancient style, seal carving is unique, and he is also good at writing poetry. He used to serve as Honorary Professor of the Central Academy of Fine Arts and Chairman of the Chinese Artists Association.
