Roberto Matta
Chilean painter, a pioneering figure in abstract Expressionism and Surrealism in 20th century. Roberto Matta was born in Santiago, originally studied architecture and interior design at the Catholic University of Chile. His wokrs have a floating sense of surrealism, with lines and symbols that presenting the issues of war and race conflicts on the canvas. He played a key and catalytic role in the development of Abstract Expressionism, and also influenced his contemporaries including Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko.
