Chinese ink-splashing painter and calligrapher, formerly known as Zhengquan, later renamed as Yan, with the word Jiyan, the name Daqian, and the alias Daqianjushi. Born at Neijiang City in Sichuan Province, Zhang Daqian studied painting with his mother and brothers at young age. With his second brother Zhang Shanzi they founded the "Dafengtang School". They are the most legendary ink-splash painters in the Chinese art world of the 20th century. His painting style is elegant and ethereal, especially in landscapes. After living abroad, he combined painting and writing and obtained a huge international reputation. Zhang Daqian was praised by the West as "The Oriental Pen".
