Born in Yixing in Jiangsu province, graduated from Hangzhou Academy of Art. Wu Guanzhong studied under Lin Fengmian and Pan Tianshou, a Chinese painter and art educator. He was the first Chinese artist to be selected as a Correspondence Academician of the French Academy of Arts. He started from oil painting and then turned to ink and wash. His original "color ink painting" works have both the essence and etherealness of traditional Chinese ink and the color composition of Western modern paintings. He has been fond of landscape painting throughout his life, and has been praised as "Three Swordsman in France".
