Dutch painter, sculptor and poet. Born in Amsterdam, Karel Appel began to paint at the age of 14. He studied at the Amsterdam National Academy of Arts and is one of the founders of the Cobra Movement. He moved to Paris in 1950 and finally settled in New York. He painted murals for the Museum of the City of Amsterdam and the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. He has received the Venice Biennale Award and the Guggenheim Award.
